Albert Webster Edgerly (1852-1926) wrote dozens of books of self-help and crankery, most commonly using the pen-name Edmund Shaftesbury.
In Lessons in Acting, published in 1889, Edgerly’s delusional self-belief, lack of insight into the dramatic arts and complete absence of any sense of humour combine to create a classic of inadvertent hilarity.
